USGS ·

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Ende, on Indonesia’s Flores island, at 00:46 UTC on 17 August 2026 (08:46 local time). The US Geological Survey’s reviewed information placed the event about 65 km north-north-west of Ende, at a depth of roughly 49 km. Its ShakeMap indicated light-to-moderate shaking, with the strongest estimated intensity around Modified Mercalli V, meaning the tremor would generally have been felt by many people but was not expected to cause widespread structural damage.

Indonesia’s BMKG initially reported a closely related assessment of magnitude 5.8, locating the epicentre north-west of Ende and saying that the earthquake had no tsunami potential. Differences in early magnitude, depth and location estimates are common as agencies process additional seismic data. The UN- and European Commission-supported GDACS system assessed the likely humanitarian impact as low, estimating about 40,000 people were exposed to intensity V shaking; no major damage or casualties were identified in the available monitoring information. Residents were advised to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
