Magnitude 6.1 earthquake — Ende, Indonesia
Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near Ende, on Indonesia’s Flores island, at 22:28 UTC on 14 August 2026 (06:28 local time on 15 August), according to the US Geological Survey. The event was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres, about 58 kilometres north of Ende. It occurred shortly after a far larger magnitude 7.7 offshore earthquake in the Flores region, and was among the strongest aftershocks in the sequence.
The magnitude 6.1 tremor came as emergency services were already responding to widespread damage from the earlier mainshock. Authorities and news reports linked the main earthquake to fatalities, injuries, displacement, damaged buildings, landslides and small tsunami waves; those impacts should not be attributed separately to the later 6.1 event. Aftershocks continued across Flores, adding to residents’ anxiety and complicating relief and recovery operations in East Nusa Tenggara province.
