A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck southern Peru on 20 August, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS placed the event at 18:00 UTC, about 38 kilometres north-west of Upahuacho in Ayacucho’s Parinacochas province, at a depth of roughly 66 kilometres. Peru’s Geophysical Institute initially assessed the same earthquake at magnitude 7.2 and a deeper focal depth, illustrating that early estimates can differ between monitoring agencies as they use separate data and analysis methods. Shaking was reported across parts of southern Peru and was also felt in Lima.
Peruvian authorities said the earthquake caused limited but tangible damage. Preliminary official reports recorded three people with minor injuries and damage to homes, schools and health facilities in Ayacucho and nearby areas, with several properties deemed uninhabitable and one reported destroyed. Rockfalls were also reported near Coracora. The Peruvian Navy said there was no tsunami threat. Emergency agencies continued assessing affected communities, so reported damage figures remained subject to revision.
