Eleanor Coppola, the late mother of filmmaker Sofia Coppola, compiled eighty hours of behind-the-scenes footage shot during the production of Sofia's 2006 film "Marie Antoinette" into a documentary feature. The film, which premiered at the New York Film Festival in the Spotlight section, represents Eleanor's long-held vision to create an observational documentary in the style of Frederick Wiseman, and was completed after her death in 2024 at age 87. Sofia Coppola, who initially found watching herself on set uncomfortable, described the project as both a tribute to her mother and an opportunity to revisit a formative period in her career when she was learning to assert her creative vision.

The documentary captures the production of the 2006 "Marie Antoinette" at the Palace of Versailles, showcasing the challenges of mounting a period film, including the demanding costume and hair design process overseen by Academy Award-winning costume designer Milena Canonero, who created over seventy original dresses for star Kirsten Dunst. The footage also documents Sofia's conflict with cinematographer Lance Acord over narrative perspective—he advocated for centering King Louis XVI's viewpoint whilst she insisted on maintaining Marie Antoinette's perspective—illustrating how Sofia stood her ground as a young filmmaker finding her assertiveness on set. Narrated by actress Diane Lane and featuring Sofia's own contemporaneous diary entries, the documentary is scheduled for release on 23 October on Mubi.
