A man has died after a train struck a van at a level crossing in Burscough, West Lancashire. The collision prompted a major emergency response and disrupted rail services between Southport and Manchester; police said the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

British Transport Police were called at 3.18pm on Saturday and said the van contained one person, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Two train passengers were treated for minor injuries, while fire and ambulance crews assisted passengers from the train; all lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport were closed, with replacement buses arranged and disruption expected for the rest of the day.
