Man inspired to give back to NHS after transplant
Ashley Gray, 60, from Hillsborough, Sheffield, became a non-emergency patient transport worker after a stem cell transplant for acute myeloid leukaemia. His experience of treatment at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital inspired him to find a more meaningful way to support other patients and give back to the NHS.
Gray was diagnosed on New Year’s Day 2023 after collapsing in A&E, then spent seven weeks in hospital receiving chemotherapy before continuing treatment as an outpatient. He had his transplant on 16 May that year, returned to lorry driving a few months later and has now worked in patient transport for three years. He remains in remission, and his hospital team has praised his achievements.
