An investigation has been launched after armed police shot a man in Luton following reports that he had threatened a woman with a knife. Bedfordshire Police were called to a flat in Cardigan Street just before 1pm on Tuesday, where officers fired four shots and a baton round, leaving the man with life-changing injuries. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is examining the actions and decisions of the officers involved, including whether the use of force was reasonable, necessary and proportionate.

The woman, who was stabbed during the altercation, was also taken to hospital, though her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Neighbours described a chaotic and frightening scene, with reports of loud gunshots, screaming and a heavy police and ambulance presence that closed the road for hours. The IOPC's Emily Barry said the officers involved are currently being treated as witnesses, as there is no indication they breached professional standards, with the investigation still in its early stages.
