Manchester United miss chance to close on WSL top three in drab draw at Everton

The Guardian ·

Manchester United missed the chance to move closer to the Women’s Super League’s European qualification places after a goalless draw away to Everton. Everton’s organised midfield and defence restricted United for much of the match, while the hosts will feel they had a chance to move above their opponents.

Courtney Brosnan saved Elisabeth Terland’s close-range effort as United improved late on, but Everton also created openings: Hannah Blundell and Ornella Vignola tested Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Everton climbed above Arsenal into sixth, pending Arsenal’s Sunday match, and remain two points behind United; they have yet to beat United in 15 WSL meetings.

In short

  • United were held to a goalless draw at Everton.
  • Everton moved above Arsenal into sixth, with a game played.
  • The teams remain two points apart.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Everton’s disciplined defending and organised midfield earned a valuable point against a side pursuing European qualification, while their late chances suggest they might have taken more. Moving above Arsenal, at least until Arsenal play, also gives Everton reason to view the draw as progress.

The case against

United had an opportunity to close the gap to the European places but could not turn their late improvement, including Terland’s close-range effort, into a goal. Given Everton remain two points behind and have never beaten United in 15 WSL meetings, United may see the result as a missed chance rather than a satisfactory point.

Explained simply

The Women’s Super League is England’s top division for women’s football. Manchester United and Everton are competing for a place near the top of the table, where league position can bring qualification for European competition.

United are among the clubs chasing those places, while Everton are trying to climb the standings. Their league meetings have so far favoured United, who had not lost to Everton in 15 WSL encounters.
