Marathon’s experimental PvE roguelite mode is, bafflingly, only around for two weeks when it drops next week

Rock Paper Shotgun ·

Marathon is set to receive its Mid-Season 2 update next week, introducing Vault Breaker, the shooter's first proper PvE mode, but the roguelite-style mode will only be playable for around two weeks before it disappears. Bungie has framed the addition as experimental, with a full PvE mode reportedly planned for season 3, suggesting Vault Breaker functions more as a limited test than a permanent fixture, much to some players' frustration given the short window to try it out.

In Vault Breaker, players infiltrate the Cryo Archive solo or in a duo or trio, tackling progressively harder vaults across multiple runs and collecting a new currency, Vault Data, to upgrade a sponsored kit or purchase other gear. The mode runs from 21 July, when the update launches, until 4 August. The same update also brings refreshed implant iconography, a new "evolution" prestige system for the Cradle with unlockable runner style shells, and smaller tweaks such as toggleable invisibility for the assassin shell, drone-based player highlighting for the thief, and automatic equipping of sponsored kits.

In short

  • Marathon's new PvE mode, Vault Breaker, launches 21 July.
  • It runs for only two weeks, ending 4 August.
  • A full PvE mode is expected later, in season 3.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A short trial lets Bungie test a new PvE format, gather feedback and tune it before the fuller mode planned for season 3. A limited run may also make the event feel distinctive while helping the studio manage development risks in a live game.

The case against

Two weeks may be too brief for players to fit the mode into their schedules, learn its escalating runs and make meaningful use of its progression. Since this is the first substantial PvE offering, removing it so soon could frustrate players who want to explore it at their own pace and weaken confidence that new content will remain accessible.

Explained simply

Marathon is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter developed by Bungie. The game has primarily focused on competitive player-versus-player modes, where teams of players battle directly against one another.

Players have long requested player-versus-environment gameplay, where the challenge comes from computer-controlled opponents rather than other players. To explore this demand, Bungie is introducing Vault Breaker as an experimental mode, treating it as a trial run before potentially developing a more substantial PvE experience.

Vault Breaker sees players undertaking infiltration missions solo or in teams of up to three, tackling progressively harder vaults. Players collect resources across multiple runs to upgrade their equipment, with each attempt building on the progress made previously.
