Marathon’s Rescue Mission Begins with This New Roguelite Mode, Playable Solo or Co-Op on PS5

Push Square · 13 hours ago

Bungie has launched an experimental new mode for its struggling shooter Marathon, in an apparent bid to broaden the game's appeal after weak sales on PS5 and Steam. Called "Vault Breaker," the roguelite PvE mode is playable solo or in co-op and marks the developer's first concrete attempt to address widespread criticism that Marathon is too hardcore for casual players, following a turbulent period at the studio that included Destiny 2 support ending, hundreds of layoffs, and the departure of Marathon's Game Director.

The mode is set within the Cryo Archive level and runs from 21st July until 4th August, offering progressively stronger runs and unlockable rewards, some of which carry over into the game's existing PvP content. Given the short two-week trial window, Bungie is expected to closely monitor player feedback before deciding on any permanent changes, with commentators suggesting it's a sensible, if modest, first step rather than an instant fix for the game's fortunes.
