Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has suggested Erling Haaland could be rested soon, either against Porto in Tuesday's Champions League opener or in the near future, citing fatigue after the striker played every competitive minute of the season and reached the World Cup quarter-finals with Norway. Maresca praised Haaland's development off the pitch, saying becoming a father in 2024 has made him "complete" as a player and person, while he continues to score prolifically for City.

Haaland has scored three goals in City's opening three Premier League wins and has won the league's golden boot in three of his four seasons at the club. If he is rested for the trip to Porto's Estádio do Dragão, Maresca's options include starting Antoine Semenyo up front or deploying Phil Foden or Rayan Cherki as a false nine. Porto, unbeaten in 14 of their last 15 European home games and top of the Primeira Liga with a maximum 15 points, are seen as a tough opponent, with Maresca also flagging their strength at set pieces. Nico O'Reilly is likely to be available after a fitness issue, though Jérémy Doku's return remains uncertain.
