Margaret Glaspy has released I Am Both, a deliberately stripped-back, acoustic-leaning follow-up to her 2023 album Echo the Diamond. The album’s intimacy reflects both its live recording approach and Glaspy’s decision to step away from social media, which she says helped her regain a sense of independent thought.

Produced by Joe Henry, the record was recorded over three days at Reservoir Studios in New York with drummer Jay Bellerose, keyboardist Patrick Warren and bassist Ross Gallagher. Glaspy will tour in support of the album this autumn.

– “Michigan” was started on a tour bus after travelling through northern Michigan.
– “Reminder” grew in importance after initially seeming unremarkable to Glaspy.
– “That Rose” was inspired by The Band and came together naturally.
– “I Thought She Was a Song” developed through the contributions of the studio ensemble.
– “Petty” was an older song that Glaspy finally found a place for.
– “Common Ground” taught her to play harmonica.
