UC Berkeley is a major university in California, and Silicon Valley is the technology hub south of San Francisco, home to many influential companies and investors. Gene editing is a way of changing DNA, the material that carries instructions in living things; research in this field can attract attention from both scientists and technology investors.
The series brings together people with different kinds of influence: a gene-editing professor, a venture capitalist who invests in businesses, and a con artist who deceives people for money. Its San Francisco setting links wealth, technology and social status, while the thriller premise explores the risks that can arise when those interests meet.
