Dr Amy MacIntyre, a 53-year-old psychiatrist in Pennsylvania, has had her medical licence revoked following an investigation that found she engaged in a seven-year sexual relationship with Justin Kopicki, a patient she had been treating since his teenage years. The case raises concerns about professional boundaries in healthcare and whether female practitioners face equivalent scrutiny to male counterparts when accused of sexual misconduct. Despite the licence revocation in May, a judge permitted MacIntyre to continue practising whilst she appeals, citing a shortage of psychiatrists in the region.

MacIntyre began treating Kopicki in 2004 when he was 17, initially for anxiety following childhood leukaemia. Over subsequent years, their professional relationship deteriorated, with sexual contact beginning in 2011 when Kopicki was 24. According to the Board's investigation, MacIntyre gave Kopicki expensive gifts including a $5,000 saxophone and Cartier watch, took him on overseas trips, sent him naked photographs, continued prescribing psychiatric medications including Xanax and Adderall, allegedly claimed she miscarried his child, and proposed marriage. Kopicki has characterised the seven-year relationship as abusive and manipulative, driven by control and deception.
