Marvel’s Most Infamous Cancelled Series Officially Resurfaces 9 Years Later
New behind-the-scenes material from Marvel’s cancelled New Warriors television series has been shared publicly, nine years after the project was commissioned. The footage offers the clearest official glimpse yet of a show that could have introduced Squirrel Girl to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and marked Marvel’s first half-hour, single-camera live-action comedy.
Freeform ordered a ten-episode first season in 2017, with the series following young superpowered adults in Cleveland through a mockumentary format similar to The Office. A pilot was produced, but the programme was dropped after Freeform’s schedule filled up and other outlets declined to take it on; the later closure of Marvel Television further ended its prospects. Derek Theler, cast as Mr Immortal, posted set photos and footage including Squirrel Girl’s puppet sidekick Tippy-Toe and a comic scene featuring Milana Vayntrub.
- Cancelled Marvel comedy New Warriors has reappeared through behind-the-scenes footage.
- The 2017 project would have introduced Squirrel Girl to the MCU.
- A completed pilot failed to find a broadcaster.

Marvel’s New Warriors was planned as a television comedy based on lesser-known characters from Marvel comics. It would have followed a group of young people with unusual abilities trying to make their way in Cleveland, led by Doreen Green, also known as Squirrel Girl.
Squirrel Girl is a comic-book character with the power to communicate with squirrels and a deliberately light-hearted style. The cast also included Mr Immortal, a man who cannot die, alongside other heroes and antiheroes from the comics.
The project was part of Marvel Television, the separate TV division that made shows before it was folded into Marvel Studios. Its cancellation meant the characters were not introduced on screen at the time, making the newly released production material notable for fans interested in Marvel projects that never reached broadcast.
