Marvel’s Wolverine “fully playable” on disc when it releases, Insomniac clarifies, perhaps making it one of the last few PlayStation games that will be
Insomniac Games has clarified that Marvel's Wolverine will be "fully playable" on disc when it launches for PlayStation 5, meaning buyers of the physical version won't need to download the full game to play it. This detail has taken on added significance because Sony, Insomniac's owner, plans to stop producing game discs entirely from January 2028, effectively making Wolverine one of the last fully disc-based PlayStation titles.
Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed confirmed the disc will contain the complete game, though players are still encouraged to install a day-one patch, as the team continues polishing and bug-fixing ahead of release. Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald described the studio as "perfectionists" keen to use every available minute before launch. Sony's move away from discs has proved controversial, sparking petitions and protests over fears it will end second-hand game sales and hand Sony greater control over digital pricing; Insomniac declined to comment on the backlash when asked, steering the conversation back to the game itself, which is due out on 15th September and takes a more linear, violent approach than the studio's Spider-Man titles.
