Marvel’s Wolverine is the latest target of Sony physical disc backlash

Polygon · 4 hours ago

Sony's PlayStation account released a new trailer for Marvel's Wolverine, only for the comments to be overwhelmed by ongoing backlash over the company's decision to end physical disc production for new games from 2028. The anger, which began with days of social media silence from Sony's accounts, has since spread beyond Sony's own output to affect other, unrelated developers whose games are reposted by PlayStation's official channels, creating headaches for studios that have little to do with the original decision.

Wolverine developer Insomniac, a PlayStation-owned studio, has already confirmed a physical disc release for the game, but this has not stopped players flooding the trailer with sarcastic comments about the character's "physical" traits. Other, smaller titles have been caught in the crossfire: the team behind co-op game Hela: of Mice & Magic paused its social media after a trailer was swamped with anti-Sony comments, while indie developer Duskfade had to explain that a physical edition depends on digital sales performance. Meanwhile, Mortal Shell 2's limited physical editions are reportedly nearly sold out with no guarantee of more being made, and with Grand Theft Auto 6 also due digital-only later this year, the backlash shows no sign of easing.
