The change was intended to attract more customers and keep the business open, but critics accused the venue of endangering disabled and immunocompromised people and called for a boycott; some comments reportedly included threats of violence.

The bar had previously required patrons to wear masks except when eating or drinking, as part of its accessibility policy. Its owners were reportedly unable to pay themselves or staff, while remaining owner Jackie Matellian lived in her truck for six months, worked four jobs and carried a $50,000 loan. The backlash continued after the bar apologised for its announcement, with critics also objecting to the lack of alt text and noting that Saturday-only masking did not address ongoing COVID-19 risks.
