Massage clients report bizarre flu-like reaction after popular spa treatment
Some massage clients report aches, fatigue and headaches afterwards, a reaction informally dubbed “massage flu”. Experts say the symptoms can be genuine but are not a recognised medical diagnosis, and may result from muscle soreness or a mild inflammatory response.
Symptoms usually last 24 to 48 hours, particularly after intense treatment or for people unused to massages. Experts reject claims that massages release toxins, recommending gentler sessions, hydration and light movement; medical advice is advised if symptoms persist beyond roughly 72 hours or include fever, numbness, severe pain or faintness.
- Massage may cause temporary flu-like symptoms.
