Two unnamed members of Massive Attack have been barred from re-entering Singapore after displaying a Palestinian flag and expressing support for Palestine during a 29 July concert. Singaporean authorities also said they would reject future applications for the band to perform there, underlining the country’s restrictions on political expression and foreign flags at public events.

Police issued the musicians with “stern warnings” under the Public Order Act after investigating the flag display and reported shout of “Free Palestine”. Public display of foreign national emblems without permission can result in a fine of up to S$500 (£290), up to six months’ imprisonment, or both; authorities are also investigating possible breaches of the concert licence. Massive Attack have long supported Palestine and have not performed in Israel since 1999.
