Singaporean police and media regulators have opened an investigation into Massive Attack after the band reportedly displayed a Palestinian flag and led a “Free Palestine” chant at a concert in Singapore. The development underlines the country’s restrictions on public expression connected to the Gaza war and on unpermitted displays of foreign national symbols.

Authorities said reports had been filed and that the Infocomm Media Development Authority was examining a possible breach of licence conditions. Singapore supports a two-state solution and Palestinian UN membership, but has sought to limit public displays related to the conflict; if convicted, band members could face a S$500 fine and up to six months’ imprisonment. Massive Attack have not commented, have not been detained, and are due to perform in Seoul on 1 August.
