Masterpiece PBS has confirmed that the second series of its acclaimed Maigret detective drama will return on 18 October, alongside a first-look image. The show, based on Georges Simenon's novels featuring French police detective Jules Maigret, was renewed for a second season in April after the first run premiered to strong reviews last November, and this update ends months of scant detail about the follow-up.

The new adaptation, created for television by Patrick Harbinson (known for Homeland and 24), reimagines Maigret as a younger detective early in his career, working alongside a squad of junior colleagues in Paris, in contrast to the 2016 ITV version starring an older Maigret played by Rowan Atkinson. Simenon wrote more than 50 Maigret novels and short stories, giving adaptations a deep well of material to draw from, and this latest take has been praised for its methodical, character-driven approach to detective drama.
