Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron has confirmed that the band's final studio album is now being mixed, marking significant progress on a long-delayed project featuring vocals recorded by frontman Chris Cornell before his death in 2017. The announcement matters to fans because it brings closer to completion what will effectively be Soundgarden's last recorded statement, built from material Cornell and Cameron worked on together in the years before the singer's passing.

Speaking on Dean Delray's Let There Be Talk podcast, Cameron said the eight-track album is being mixed by Joe Barresi, who also handled the band's previous record, 2012's King Animal. No release date has been set, with Cameron describing a long process finally nearing the "finish line". He explained that the songs draw on demos exchanged with Cornell from around 2013–2014, plus live rehearsal recordings, including Cornell's guitar parts, from sessions ahead of the band's final 2017 tour; guitarist Kim Thayil is reportedly keen to develop some leftover instrumental material separately. The project follows an earlier update that producer Terry Date, known for his work on Louder Than Love, had been finishing the recording process.
