Sheffield United have signed Matt Doherty, the 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international, after his exit from Wolverhampton Wanderers, bolstering the Championship side's defensive options ahead of the new season. The versatile full-back, wing-back or centre-back becomes Sheffield United's second signing of the summer, following a loan move for Brentford's Romelle Donovan, as the club strengthens its squad following relegation-hit turnover at his previous club.

Doherty joins on a one-year deal with the option of a further year, having left Wolves this summer after his second spell there ended when the club were relegated from the Premier League; he made 15 appearances last season and nearly 400 across his two stints at Molineux, having also previously played for Tottenham Hotspur. He described the move as one that "wasn't a no-brainer," suggesting careful consideration before agreeing terms, and has already made his debut for the Blades in a 2-0 win over Rotherham United.
