Maxwell gives sub-optimal code a runtime glow-up
DoubleAI has introduced Maxwell, a system that uses an AI model to optimise and rewrite machine code while a programme is running. It aims to improve performance by adapting to the hardware, data and bottlenecks encountered at runtime, while formally proving that replacement code behaves equivalently.
The company says Maxwell has made data pipelines more than 38 times faster and AI inference kernels more than 4.5 times faster. It also reports that LTX-2.5, a model for generating 4K video, ran almost twice as fast after Maxwell reduced data transfers between GPUs and removed unnecessary token padding. The reported gains vary by code and hardware; Maxwell does not alter the original source code.
- Maxwell rewrites machine code while programmes run.
- DoubleAI reports gains of up to 38 times for data pipelines.
- Formal proofs are used to check that optimisations remain sound.
