Maya Hawke Says These 2 Taylor Swift Songs Are Like ‘Epic Poetry,’ Explains Why Eminem Is the GOAT

Maya Hawke praised Taylor Swift’s songwriting and Eminem’s rebellious attitude during an appearance on Hot Ones. She described two Swift songs as ambitious, tightly constructed stories, and said Eminem’s refusal to seek approval offers a model for artists.

Asked which Swift songs could represent her in an “American anthology of poetry”, Hawke chose “But Daddy I Love Him” and “Betty”, saying they tell original stories without clichés. She also argued that the arts have lost some of their punk spirit, and that Eminem’s willingness to embrace bad reviews reminds her to value artistic independence. Hawke’s latest album, Maitreya Corso, was released in May.
