Driver arrested after ute hits barrier near Gold Coast 500, injuring guard

Daily Mail ·

A man has been arrested after a ute allegedly struck a barrier near the Gold Coast 500 in Surfers Paradise, injuring a security guard. The incident happened close to a major event attended by families, prompting an emergency response.

Police say the Toyota Hilux was reported to be driving dangerously along the Esplanade shortly before 9pm on Friday, then deliberately hit a barrier at Staghorn Avenue. A 40-year-old man from Labrador, understood to be a security guard, was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg. The 31-year-old driver allegedly fled before officers found him nearby; he was bitten by a police dog during his arrest and also received hospital treatment. Investigations are continuing.

In short

  • A ute allegedly rammed a barrier near the Gold Coast 500.
  • A security guard was hospitalised with a suspected broken leg.
  • Police arrested a 31-year-old man nearby.

Explained simply

The Gold Coast 500 is a motor-racing event held on a street circuit in Surfers Paradise, a busy coastal area in Queensland. The Esplanade and Staghorn Avenue are near the event precinct, where crowds and security staff may be present during race weekend.

Queensland Police investigate alleged offences and can arrest people they suspect are involved; charges and court proceedings determine whether allegations are proven. The incident matters because it involved an injured worker near a large public event, where vehicle movements and crowd safety are closely managed.
