McClenaghan seventh in European pommel horse final

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Olympic champion Rhys McClenaghan finished seventh in the pommel horse final at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb, falling short of a fourth European title. The 27-year-old Northern Irishman was seeking a strong return following shoulder surgery, having previously placed sixth at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in his first major event since the injury.

McClenaghan scored 14.000 with a tweaked routine, an improvement on his Commonwealth Games showing but well below the 15.533 that won him Olympic gold in Paris two years ago. Gold went to Italy's Gabriele Targhetta with 15.133, ahead of Armenia's Manukyan Hamlet and Khachatryan Mamikon. Elsewhere, Belfast's Eamon Montgomery took seventh in his first European floor final after a 0.3-point penalty for stepping out of bounds, scoring 13.533; Israel's Artem Dolgopyat won gold with 14.466, and Great Britain's Harry Hepworth took bronze with 14.300.

  • McClenaghan placed seventh in pommel horse, missing a fourth Euro gold
  • Score of 14.000 still down on his Paris 2024 gold-winning 15.533
  • Montgomery also seventh in floor final after penalty; GB's Hepworth won bronze
