The result marks a notable turnaround for the Northern Irishman after a difficult showing last time out, and keeps him firmly in contention as the play-off standings take shape ahead of the season-ending Tour Championship.

McIlroy had finished a lowly 66th at the St Jude Championship, the opening play-off event, but has bounced back strongly in St Louis to move into a share of the lead. His improved form comes as world number one Scottie Scheffler continues to dominate the season, having cruised to an eight-shot victory at the first FedEx Cup play-off event.
