McIlroy improves to go joint-second as Clark retains lead

BBC Sport · 2 hours ago

Wyndham Clark retained control of the BMW Championship after the third round, extending his lead to five shots at 17-under par. The American shot 65 despite double-bogeying the opening hole, before collecting an eagle and four additional birdies to dominate the leaderboard at Bellerive Country Club.

Rory McIlroy recovered from a previous slip to move into joint-second place alongside Patrick Cantlay, both sitting at 12-under par. McIlroy's strong 65 propelled him back into contention after his second-round 69 had cost him the first-day advantage. Behind them, Americans Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland occupied third place at 11-under, with the remainder of the field scattered across the leaderboard ahead of Sunday's final round.

  • Clark maintains 5-shot lead at -17 after round three 65
  • McIlroy and Cantlay tied for second at -12 heading into final round
  • Tournament set up with competitive leaderboard despite Clark's advantage
