Mechanism launches Switch 2 case with modular mounts and swappable grips
Mechanism has launched the $49 Basecase, its first snap-on protective shell for the Nintendo Switch 2. It combines console protection and more comfortable Joy-Con grips with compatibility for the company’s modular mounting system, while addressing fit and security problems seen in some earlier cases.
The shell preserves access to the console’s ports, buttons, fan vents and kickstand, and its rear plate and controller grips can be swapped for 3D-printed designs. The included grips come in two sizes and can hold game cartridges; the case also includes a USB-C adapter for using the official dock, though fitting it takes some effort. The Switch 2 cannot be docked with the case on without that adapter, and users of some third-party docks do not need it.
- Mechanism’s $49 Basecase protects the Switch 2 and works with modular mounts.
- Swappable grips and rear plates allow custom 3D-printed additions.
- Docking requires an included USB-C adapter, which can be awkward to fit.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is Nintendo's latest portable gaming console. Like all gaming devices, it benefits from a protective case to guard against damage from drops and everyday wear.
Cases for gaming consoles have long faced competing demands: they need to protect the device, offer a comfortable grip, and allow access to charging ports and docking stands. Many existing cases force users to choose between good protection and being able to dock the console properly.
Mechanism is an accessories manufacturer that focuses on modular designs for gaming devices. Their approach uses interchangeable components, allowing players to customise their case setup without replacing the entire protective shell each time.
