Mediawan’s Pierre-Antoine Capton on Buying Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Doubling Down on Hollywood Amid Consolidation (EXCLUSIVE)
Mediawan has acquired 100% of Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, in a deal that also makes Witherspoon a shareholder in the Paris-based group. The move extends Mediawan’s expansion in Hollywood and reflects its strategy of pairing independent producers with internationally recognised creative talent.
The companies did not disclose the terms, but the reported price was in the lower tens of millions of dollars, far below Hello Sunshine’s $900 million valuation when Candle Media bought a majority stake in 2021. Mediawan says its investment will fund development and content, and plans to bring Witherspoon’s Book Club intellectual property to producers in Europe. Hello Sunshine is known for projects including “Big Little Lies” and “The Morning Show”.

New here? Start with this
Mediawan is a Paris-based group that owns and backs companies making film and television. Hello Sunshine is a US production company founded by actor Reese Witherspoon, known for bringing stories about women to the screen, including Big Little Lies and The Morning Show.
Witherspoon’s Book Club is a reading group whose selected books can provide source material for screen projects. Mediawan’s interest in it reflects how production companies seek stories and creative partners that can reach audiences in more than one country.
The deal also comes amid consolidation, as companies combine or invest in producers to build their libraries and expand their reach. Mediawan is seeking a larger presence in Hollywood, while Witherspoon becomes a shareholder in the wider group.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The acquisition could give Hello Sunshine access to Mediawan’s international financing, production and distribution network, helping it develop more projects and bring Witherspoon’s Book Club stories to audiences in Europe. Making Witherspoon a shareholder may also align her interests with the group’s long-term growth, while Mediawan gains a recognised creative partner as it expands in Hollywood.
The case against
The reported price, far below Hello Sunshine’s 2021 valuation, may raise questions about how much value the company and its creative assets retain, even though the deal’s terms were not disclosed. Bringing an independent producer into a larger international group could also reduce its autonomy or shift priorities towards the parent company’s commercial and expansion goals.
