Mel Gibson has revealed that his long-awaited two-part sequel to "The Passion of the Christ" will be filmed in English, breaking from the original's use of Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin. Speaking to Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo, Gibson explained that the resurrection story's theological complexity made subtitles impractical, arguing audiences needed the material delivered in their own language rather than having to read it. The interview coincides with a Fathom Events cinema re-release of the original 2004 film.

Titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," the sequel arrives in two instalments, with Part One due on 6 May 2027 and Part Two on 25 May 2028, more than two decades after the original premiered. Gibson said the films would move beyond the final hours of Jesus's life depicted in the first film to explore the resurrection and its aftermath, describing the project as a "monster" undertaking that takes viewers on a "trip" spanning different spiritual realms. He noted the writing and pre-production had taken over a decade, and reflected that the project's delayed timing likely happened for a reason.
