Melbourne Soul Crew Surprise Chef Announce New Mixtape ‘Frogs In A Pond’
Melbourne instrumental soul and funk outfit Surprise Chef have announced a new mixtape titled 'Frogs In A Pond', set for release on 23rd October via Concord Jazz. The project sees the group, known for their analogue, DIY approach to reviving vintage soul and funk sounds, lean further into a cinematic direction, drawing inspiration from Italian film composers Piero Umiliani and Piero Piccioni, including scores such as Camille 2000 and Colpo Rovente.
The 13-track mixtape is conceived as the soundtrack to an imaginary film, with its tracklisting designed to mirror specific plot points, giving the record a strongly visual, narrative quality. Alongside the announcement, the band shared a new track, 'Leg Day', described as a groove-led performance showcasing their tight musical chemistry; other tracks on the release include 'Frog Technique', 'Knuckle Sandwich' and the title track 'Frogs In A Pond'.
