Doncaster Council is planning a memorial for 11-year-old Mackenzie Swift, who died after getting into difficulty in the River Don in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. The council said it is working with Mackenzie's family to create a "suitable tribute or place of remembrance", as local officials renewed calls for stronger national action on open water safety following a spate of drowning deaths across the UK.

Mackenzie went missing in the river on 30 May and his body was recovered on 2 June after a 48-hour search operation. Councillor Sue Farmer, Doncaster's cabinet member for children, young people and families, described his death as an "avoidable loss of life" and called the current approach to water safety a "national crisis", also praising the work of Sam's Army Mission 1 Life, a Rotherham charity set up after 16-year-old Sam Haycock drowned at Ulley Reservoir in 2021. Mackenzie's school remembered him as a "kind, caring and sensitive young man".
