Fans of Geese frontman Cameron Winter recently discovered that a little-known 2019 EP by an act called Men of the Reef was in fact an early recording of his, made when he was just 16. The find has drawn attention because Winter, who has become widely acclaimed following the success of his solo album Heavy Metal and Geese's Getting Killed, was already displaying the hallmarks of his now-distinctive sound years before he found mainstream recognition.

The three-track Elephant Hunter EP was written and recorded in 2016 with Winter's high-school friend Oliver Seda, though it wasn't uploaded to streaming platforms until 2019. Its songs, including opener "Wolf Pack Leader" and "Buffalo", show a rootsier, understated style that some listeners found more mature than his later work. The EP was quietly pulled from streaming services in August 2026, shortly after fans began connecting it to Winter's now-famous voice.
