The Mercury Prize has confirmed key details for its 2027 event, including the date its 12-artist shortlist will be revealed and the panel of judges who will select it. The announcement follows a record-breaking 2025 ceremony in Newcastle, the first time in the prize's history it was held outside London, where local singer-songwriter Sam Fender won for his album 'People Watching'. The awards will return to Newcastle for a second consecutive year, reflecting the economic and cultural boost the city gained from hosting.

The 2027 shortlist will be revealed live on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds from 10:30am this Thursday (30 July), with the ceremony itself taking place in Newcastle on 22 October and public tickets now on sale. The judging panel is chaired by Radio 2's Jeff Smith and includes music writer Sophie Williams, The Times critic Will Hodgkinson, composer AFRODEUTSCHE, and broadcasters including Jamie Cullum, MistaJam and Sian Eleri, while Radio 1's Maia Beth returns to host shortlisted artist interviews. Organisers noted that the 2025 Newcastle event drew nearly 8,000 visitors, generated £874,724 in spending and an estimated £552,868 in regional economic value, and gave 35 local people work experience; Fender, who beat competition from Pulp, Wolf Alice, Fontaines D.C. and CMAT, donated his £25,000 prize to the Music Venue Trust.
