Messiah or papering over cracks? Klopp must sway doubters in Germany rebuild

BBC Sport · 4 hours ago

Jürgen Klopp has been appointed Germany head coach on a four-year deal after Julian Nagelsmann resigned following a shock World Cup penalty shootout defeat by Paraguay. The former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager is expected to restore confidence, reconnect the team with supporters and lead a rebuild through Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.

Klopp’s first match will be against the Netherlands on 24 September, and he will work with former Liverpool assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz. Eighty per cent of respondents in a Kicker poll backed his appointment, but some supporters remain critical of his links with Red Bull, whose multi-club model is unpopular among many German fans.

  • Klopp takes charge of Germany until 2030.
  • He replaces Nagelsmann after World Cup disappointment.
  • Support is strong, though Red Bull links divide fans.
