The IOPC says the Metropolitan Police should investigate its own handling of the arrest of Nicholas Brandram, who was suspected of being the “Putney Pusher” and was found dead at home aged 44. The review will examine whether his arrest was necessary and proportionate, how police engaged with the media, and whether his welfare was properly considered.

Brandram was arrested in June over a 2017 incident in which a jogger appeared to push a woman into the path of a bus on Putney Bridge, but remained under investigation without charge. His family said there was no credible evidence against him and believed prolonged police scrutiny contributed to his death. An inquest heard that he died from ligature compression of the neck, with no evidence of third-party involvement; the wider investigation remains ongoing.
