Metro Redux’s Next-Gen Update arrives this month as franchise passes 50 million sales

Eurogamer ·

Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux are receiving free next-gen updates this month as the long-running franchise celebrates surpassing 50 million copies sold worldwide. The updates will arrive on 22nd October for PC and 29th October for consoles, enhancing the 16-year-old games with modern visual and audio improvements ahead of the highly anticipated Metro 2039 launch next year. Whilst not a full remaster, the update preserves the original games' aesthetic whilst adding 4K textures, improved animations, higher-quality audio, and richer environmental detail alongside bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

The update delivers platform-specific enhancements: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners gain native support with options for native 4K/60fps or upscaled 4K/120fps gameplay, enhanced lighting and shadows, and controller haptics through DualSense Adaptive Triggers or Xbox Impulse Triggers, whilst Xbox players additionally receive Play Anywhere compatibility and handheld support. PC players gain DLSS support alongside spatial audio improvements. The free update will be available across all major platforms—Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, and GOG on PC, plus PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S—for all existing owners of the Redux titles. This update precedes Metro 2039's 4th February release, with early hands-on impressions praising its graphics, narrative depth, and atmospheric tension.

The Metro franchise consists of post-apocalyptic video games set in Russia's Moscow metro system following a catastrophic nuclear war. Based on novels by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky, these atmospheric, story-driven games have become one of gaming's most respected science-fiction series.

The original Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light games, released in 2010 and 2013 respectively, have sold over 50 million copies worldwide across all versions and formats. This milestone reflects the dedicated fanbase the franchise has accumulated over its 16-year lifespan.

The franchise is preparing for the launch of Metro 2039, a new instalment coming next year. Refreshing the earlier games now offers fans an opportunity to revisit the established series before the new entry arrives.
