MGM+’s Horror Thriller Officially Becomes the Biggest Show on Netflix Right Now

Collider ·

The horror thriller *From* has become a major hit on Netflix after the first three seasons were added to the US service. Its performance shows how streaming platforms are increasingly licensing programmes from rivals to reach more viewers, while potentially directing some of them to the original service.

Created by John Griffin, with Jeff Pinkner as showrunner, *From* follows residents trapped in a town where monsters emerge at night and attempts to escape bring people back. The series is MGM+’s most-watched show ever, and every season has a Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score above 90%. On Netflix US, it has spent a week in the top ten and peaked at number two; the latest and forthcoming final seasons remain exclusive to MGM+.

In short

  • *From* has reached number two on Netflix US.
  • Its first three seasons are available there.
  • The latest and final seasons remain on MGM+.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Licensing From to Netflix lets MGM+ reach a much larger audience, earn revenue and build interest in a series that viewers can continue on MGM+. Netflix subscribers also gain access to a well-reviewed show without needing another subscription, while the deal illustrates how platforms can benefit from sharing programmes as well as competing for exclusives.

The case against

Putting only the first three seasons on Netflix may frustrate viewers who want to finish the story, especially if they must add or switch subscriptions to watch later seasons. Wider licensing can also make it harder for MGM+ to distinguish its own service and may encourage audiences to expect popular programmes to arrive on larger platforms instead.

Explained simply

From is a horror series about people trapped in a town they cannot escape, where dangerous creatures appear after dark. It was created by John Griffin, with Jeff Pinkner as showrunner, and is the most-watched programme on MGM+.

MGM+ is the series’ original home, while Netflix has licensed its first three seasons for viewers in the US. This lets Netflix offer an established programme and may introduce viewers to MGM+, where the later seasons remain exclusive.
