Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Rides Halloween Boo-sts Back Onto Hot 100
Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” has returned to the US Billboard Hot 100 at No. 20 as Halloween listening lifted its streams, radio audience and sales. Its seasonal rise matters because the 1983 song has again reached the chart’s top 20, after hitting No. 10 last year.
For the 23–29 October tracking week, “Thriller” gained 49% to 9.3 million eligible streams, doubled its radio audience to 4.2 million and increased sales 61% to 3,000. It first peaked at No. 4 in 1984 and has returned each Halloween season since 2018. Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” re-entered at No. 39, while “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas reached No. 41.
In short
- “Thriller” returns to the Hot 100 at No. 20.
- Its US streams rose 49% to 9.3 million.
- Two other Halloween songs also re-entered the chart.
Explained simply
Billboard’s Hot 100 ranks songs in the United States using a mix of streaming, radio play and sales. Michael Jackson released “Thriller” in 1983, and its spooky sound and music video have made it a regular choice around Halloween.
The song first reached No. 4 on the chart in 1984 and has returned during Halloween seasons in recent years. Its chart position can rise as more people stream or buy it and as radio stations play it more. Seasonal returns also show how older songs can find new audiences years after their release.
