Michael Mann, 83, photographed on crutches after accidentally shooting himself in leg at gun range

Film director Michael Mann, 83, has been seen on crutches after accidentally shooting himself in the leg during firearm training at a Los Angeles gun range. His representatives described the injury as superficial, and the incident drew attention because Mann is a veteran director currently preparing a sequel to his best-known film, Heat.

Mann was photographed leaving what appeared to be an orthopaedic surgeon’s office with his left foot in a cast and a medical boot. Police said he accidentally discharged the gun while training; a source said it went off as he was trying to holster it. He was taken to hospital by ambulance on 31 October and was expected to be released soon. Mann has practised target shooting for decades, and filming for Heat 2 is reportedly due to begin in January.
