‘Michael’ sequel is officially starting filming soon

NME · 1 month ago

Lionsgate plans to begin filming the sequel to Michael, its Michael Jackson biopic, in late 2026 or early 2027. The studio is targeting a release by the end of 2027 or in the first half of 2028, following the first film’s record-breaking commercial performance.

The original film stars Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson and covers his rise from the Jackson 5 through the Bad tour. Lionsgate says previously filmed musical scenes may be reused, while it works to deliver a larger sequel within budget; it remains unclear how the follow-up will handle child sexual abuse allegations after legal restrictions affected the first film’s script. Michael reportedly grossed £750 million worldwide, becoming the first biopic to pass $1 billion.
