Mick Fleetwood knew nothing could follow a 1969 Fleetwood Mac song: “There’s no coming back”
Mick Fleetwood recalled the emotional impact of performing with Peter Green’s famous Gibson Les Paul, now owned by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. The guitar’s return to the stage more than 50 years after Fleetwood last played alongside it made a tribute to Green especially meaningful.
Hammett performed “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown)” at a 2020 celebration of Fleetwood Mac’s early years, held months after Green’s death. Fleetwood said Hammett’s performance with Billy Gibbons was chosen to close the show, adding that “there’s no coming back” after the song. Green’s guitar is known for its distinctive out-of-phase tone, created by the reversed magnetic polarity of its neck pickup.
In short
- Peter Green’s Les Paul returned to the stage with Mick Fleetwood.
- Kirk Hammett played it at a 2020 tribute to Green.
- Fleetwood said “The Green Manalishi” had to close the show.
Explained simply
Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band formed in the 1960s. Peter Green was their early lead guitarist and wrote “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Pronged Crown)”, a song from 1969 that became one of the band’s best-known recordings from that period.
Green’s Gibson Les Paul became associated with his distinctive guitar sound and is now owned by Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. The guitar’s unusual tone comes from the way its pickups are arranged. Green died in 2020, and musicians including Hammett and ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons performed at a celebration of the band’s early years.
