Microsoft corrects claim that October update fixed Windows VPN issue
Microsoft has corrected its earlier claim that an October security update fixed a problem with Windows Always On VPN. The issue, first linked to September’s update, can stop VPN connections from completing, leaving administrators and affected users reliant on a workaround while they wait for a lasting fix.
The problem affects Windows 11 versions 24H2 to 26H2 when VPN settings allow the system to try another connection method after a failure. Connections may stay on “Connecting”, repeatedly fail or report that the specified port is already in use. Microsoft’s workaround is to switch from automatic protocol selection to a single protocol; it says a fix is planned for an update in the coming weeks.
- Microsoft reclassified the VPN issue as mitigated, not fixed.
- Windows 11 VPN connections may fail or keep retrying.
- Administrators should use a single protocol until a new fix arrives.
