Microsoft is reportedly considering making more of its first-party games exclusive to Xbox

Eurogamer · 3 hours ago

According to a new Bloomberg report, Microsoft is reportedly considering making more of its first-party games exclusive to Xbox consoles, moving away from its recent strategy of releasing titles across as many platforms as possible. The reported shift is intended to give consumers a clearer reason to choose Xbox hardware over rival brands, and it matters because it marks a notable reversal for a company that had increasingly brought its games to competing platforms, including PlayStation.

The report suggests "big multiplayer games" will remain available on all major platforms, but more of Xbox's "best titles" could become console-exclusives, following recently announced exclusives Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution. New Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has framed this as "a return to Xbox" for longtime fans, and highly anticipated releases such as The Elder Scrolls 6 could potentially be affected. However, the strategy comes as Microsoft lays off 3,200 employees and parts ways with four studios, raising questions about its capacity to make such games. Notably, all Xbox titles remain available on PC, meaning they may never be truly "exclusive" in the traditional sense.

  • Microsoft may make more first-party games Xbox console-exclusive.
  • Big multiplayer titles will still reach PlayStation and other platforms.
  • Layoffs and studio closures raise doubts about delivery.
