Microsoft has moved Windows 11 version 26H2 into its Insider Release Preview Channel, signalling that this year’s feature update is nearing wider availability. The release matters chiefly because it extends support periods while using the same servicing branch and much of the same underlying code as versions 24H2 and 25H2, rather than requiring a full operating-system replacement.

The update will be enabled through a small enablement package that activates features already delivered in monthly updates, including a movable taskbar, additional Start menu options and fewer web or Microsoft Store suggestions in local search results. Support for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro ends on 13 October 2026; 26H2 provides 24 months of support for Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education, although Microsoft still advises organisations to test compatibility. Some users have reported cursor problems and black desktop backgrounds after August’s preview update, but Microsoft says it is not currently aware of issues.
