Microsoft has delayed the deletion of legacy Azure-based Whiteboard files, pushing the cut-off date from 5 September to 16 October 2026, giving enterprise customers more time to migrate to OneDrive-backed whiteboards. The delay affects organisations still using older "legacy enterprise" whiteboards stored in Azure rather than OneDrive, which has been the default storage location for new commercial whiteboards since 2022. Microsoft has not explained the reason for the extension, though The Register suggests it may reflect technical issues or a significant number of customers still relying on the legacy system.

Alongside the deletion date change, the migration tooling for legacy whiteboards will now retire on 25 September 2026, and the standalone Whiteboard app will be deprecated on 30 November 2026 — both later than originally planned. Migration happens automatically when a whiteboard is opened via the web, Teams, or the Windows app, but only the file's owner can trigger it, which could complicate matters for absent or departed staff; Microsoft has promised PowerShell cmdlets to help administrators manage the transition. Whiteboard itself, launched in 2018, is not being discontinued, and Microsoft says the OneDrive move improves security, accessibility and access to future features.
