Windows 11 Photos app unites PC, OneDrive and iCloud libraries

The Verge ·

Microsoft has redesigned the Windows 11 Photos app to bring pictures and videos from a PC, OneDrive and iCloud into one gallery. The change is intended to make it easier to browse, organise and share media across devices, while improving the app’s speed.

Users need to enable Camera Backup in the OneDrive mobile app and set up iCloud for Windows to combine those libraries. The rebuilt editor launches 25 per cent faster and has four tool groups: Crop, Enhance, Repair and Stylize; it also preserves HDR quality and supports editing HEIC and WebP files without changing their format. The viewer launches 15 per cent faster, opens HEIC images up to 30 per cent faster and now supports SVG files. The update is rolling out to Windows Insiders, with a wider release expected later this year.

  • The editor and viewer have performance and format improvements.
  • Insiders get the update first, with wider release expected later this year.

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s operating system for personal computers. Its Photos app is used to view and edit pictures and videos, while OneDrive is Microsoft’s online storage service; iCloud is Apple’s service for storing and syncing files across devices.

The app can show media stored on a PC alongside libraries from OneDrive and iCloud, bringing photos from different devices into one place. Linking the services depends on setting up their backup and sync features, and the images remain associated with the services where they are stored.

The change matters to people who use a mix of Windows PCs, phones and cloud services, as it may make their media easier to browse and organise. Windows Insiders are users who can try Windows features before a wider release.
